It's really annoying when you spritz your perfume on in the morning and by lunchtime there's not a whiff of scent left. And while some can blame that on owning a bad fragrance or "sweating" it off, it's more likely how you apply perfume that's not making it last.
According to a Penhaligon's fragrance expert, the biggest mistake many of us make when spraying our perfume is spritzing it onto our wrists and then rubbing them together.
"Rubbing the fragrance starts the evaporation process, so the fragrance won't last as long if you do this," he said. "Instead spray twice onto the wrists, the chest and the back of the neck and leave to dry."
Applying to the chest will create gentle wafts throughout the day, while applying to the wrists is good as you move your hands when you speak.
Adding a couple of sprays to the back of the neck will create a sillage (the term given to the smell fragrance wearers leave as they walk). You can also apply to the back of your knees when wearing a dress or skirt.
Apparently, well-moisturized skin is also key to ensuring your perfume lasts for longer. "Dry skin absorbs the moisture in perfume, which evaporates the perfume off the skin," says Penhaligon's fragrance expert.
3 Secrets to Picking the Perfect Scent
If it's a white floral scent: Because they can be quite powerful, apply sparingly. Fresh citrus scents, however, can be spritzed liberally throughout the day.
If you're in need of waking up: Spray citrusy cologne. Switch to a more seductive oriental fragrance for the evening (musky, spicy scents).
If you're testing in a store: Spray approximately 10 inches away from your skin or perfume card to avoid too much alcohol.
