I quit drinking alcohol during the summer of 2022. I'd realized that it had been dampening my mental health, and I was tired of the incessant anxiety and mood swings that came along with drinking. I hoped that pursuing a sober lifestyle—cutting out my cocktails and wine—would help.
After ditching the booze, I expected my skin, sleep and physical health to improve (study after study shows the detrimental effects of alcohol on your overall health), but I definitely didn't expect a strange and surprising side effect from going dry: My usually tame sweet tooth went absolutely wild.
While I’ve always liked dessert, I quickly found myself craving ice cream, chocolate, and other sweets *way* more than usual. I even found myself using sweet treats as a mood-booster. Instead of reaching for a glass of wine at the end of a long or hard day, I'd look for something sugary to take the edge off. I didn’t really notice the impact of my dessert habit until later in the summer, when some of my clothes began fitting differently. I was surprised to discover my new weight gain, given how often people associate quitting drinking with healthier habits and weight loss.
